For Harriet, a poor, illegitimate girl, social status hindered her from marring a man of higher social status. However, when Harriet marries Robert Martin, a farmers son, their relationship thrives because he and Harriet are considered of equal social status.



Although Emma initially tried to engage her friend in relationships with men of higher rank in society, eventually Mr. Knightley helps Emma come to the realization that a man of Harriets rank will satisfy her. Knightley believes that Harriet could non wish be in better hands with Robert Martin (Austen 874). Harriet and Robert in return love each other; once they married, Harriet could now look forward to giving him that full and perfect confidence which her proneness was most ready to welcome as a province (Austen 876). She is willing to sacrifice herself to care for Robert. Because neither party is outclassed to the other, no condescension or resentment infiltrates their relationship. Robert,
